Dear AEG,

We are the owner/operators of the Moorina Hydro-Electric Scheme in North-East Tasmania, Australia.

The generating plant in this installation was supplied by your company during 1908, 100 years ago.  Details of this plant are as follows.

Alternators:

AEG type VESD 500/400, Serial Nos. 365056, 365057 & 365058, RPM 500, Frequency 50 Hz, Voltage 6500, Amps 32, 360 kVa, 325 kW @ 0.9 cos.

Exciters:

Direct mounted, Type MPM 50, Serial Nos. 371057, 371058 & 371059, Volts 115, Amps 49, RPM 500, Continuous 5.6 kW.

Turbines:

Pelton wheel, J. M. Voith, Heidenheim, 1908.  Serial Nos. 3028, 3029 & 3030.

Governors:

Hartung type, of J.M. Voith, 1908.  Serial Nos. 1316, 1317 & 1318.

Switchgear:

AEG Carriage Type, 1 panel per machine and 1 outgoing feeder panel.  1 panel with phase to earth metering and 1 Tirrell AVR.

All the plant in this installation is in working order and at the time of writing, all three machines are generating.

A compendium of original correspondence between the Mine Manager and Joseph Griffin of the sole Australian Agent, Staerker & Fischer, is on file.

This plant operated for the first 40 years as a stand alone plant supplying energy to a tin mine.  The next 35 years it was operated in parallel with the Tasmanian electricity grid, supplying a tin mine.  The last 25 years it has been operated in parallel with this grid to supply energy as major mining operations ceased 25 years ago. I would be interested to know if this plant is the oldest operating example of any you have supplied.

Unfortunately, economic circumstances have compelled a complete closure of this plant, which is scheduled to occur on March 1st, 2008. Should you desire any further information, please email:

The fact that this plant is still operating today is testimony to the engineering excellence incorporated in its design and execution!

Thanks

Yours faithfully,

Mike Cooke

Director/Secretary
